Today, Internet, we will discuss Umberto Boccioni’s “Unique Forms of Continuity In Space” (or, as it is less often referred to, “Will Smith In A Man-Rage.”)
Now, I know what you must be thinking…’Will Smith?! This piece was created in 1913?!’ UH HELLO!?….FUTURISM. And no one is better at seeing the future than old Italians.
It is crazy to think, that more than 50 years before his conception, Boccioni was able to capture the energy and dynamism embodied by Smith. But the thing that still puzzles art historians today is why the Man-Rage? On one hand, it appears he is racing full speed towards fame and fortune. But maybe it is something darker? Carleton wearing his neon MC Hammer pants without asking? Jada Pinkett in bed with another man? Alien attack? Really late for a Miami Welcome Party? Perhaps he is running into the future in an attempt to stop Willow from whipping her hair back and forth? Unfortunately, only Umberto knows the truth. All we can know for sure are the things we make up in our minds.
